Looking For . ..... Ian Fraser

I am trying to track down news on Ian Fraser. His last job in the RAN was in mind-80s, when he was Controller NAVCAMSAUS and I was OIC NAVCOMMSTA
Canberra. He retired to Lemon Tree Passage in Port Stephens.  I called in to see him a few times after he left, but have lost touch.
I am not sure if he ever did join the RANCBA, or if he is still alive for that matter as cannot find any contact details for him. But am hoping that
perhaps one of your members may know something about him. If he has CTB, would be interested to know when this happened.
Any info you could give me would much appreciated.

Gary Kingdon
If you can, could you pass details to my email shortym@optusnet.com.au  and I will forward on.

Looking For .... Information on Chief Petty Officer Reg Hunt

Dear Bill

I wonder whether I might be able to tap into your network to elicit the help of the naval veterans community?

To the Navy's great disappointment it does not have in its collection a photograph of Chief Petty Officer Reg Hunt who lost his life when HMAS Hobart was mistakenly attacked by a US aircraft while in Vietnamese waters in June 1968.
I would dearly like to obtain a photograph of Reg so that we can properly commemorate his service to the RAN. Is it possible you could appeal on my behalf to your veterans group to try and obtain a photograph of Reg?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yours sincerely

Looking For .......Ex Warramunga D123 members

I have looked for ages to see if there is a reunion for Ex Warramunga D123 members
I haven’t seen any, also I have have been trying to locate an old mate of mine, we served together for about 4 years 55 to 59 his name Jack Harris  ACJ Harris L/me came from Gawler
South Australia, his Wife name is June, can you help.

Looking For ....... VAMPIRE Information

I served in Vampire II between late 1973 and 1976 as an ABRP

I build ship models and I am about to start a model of Vamps but need to get some specific information.  I was hoping the recollective memories of any of your members may be able to assist.  As an example of my work please see my H.M Bark Endeavour (1768/71) build at: http://modelshipworld.com/index.php/topic/400-hmb-endeavour-by-banyan-al-160-circa-1768/?hl=%2Bhmb+%2Bendeavour+%2Bbanyan

I am thinking of portraying Vamps as she looked in 1975/76.  At this point she was still COMAUSDESRON 2 (white stripe and black funnel sock, and 2 on the red 'roo'), and I think she still had the FUB/LUB numbers on her boats? (still trying to determine the actual Numbers); but, I am still trying to determine if, at this point, she had the Type 182 Torpedo decoy fitted and was using the epoxy non-slip deck paint (Devron).  My memory is that she received the ASW update during her late 74 / early 75 docking/refit?  Possibly, during this refit she also had the decks repainted to use devron rather than the former black-washed sand paper patches?  I have seen photos of Vendetta with the new deck paint in late 1974.

Any information to either enquiry would be very helpful.

Many thanks

Looking For ..... Queens Silver Jubilee 1977 Book

Hi Kerry,
Hoping you can help me or point me in the right direction.
A friend of mine leant my son one of his books for a school assignment and it was accidentally put into a St Vinnies collection bin. And I am now doing my best to try and replace it. (With not much luck).
I have rung every department in the navy and every military 2nd hand book shop I could find, which now leads me to you.
It is a hardcover book given to all crew members that attended the Queens Silver Jubilee in 1977, so it was never published for the general public. It basically was a pictorial of the fleet in England.
I hope you can help me in locating a copy or at the least finding the correct title of the book.
If you need any further info please email me.
Many thanks for your time and with fingers crossed,
Katrina Costello

Looking For ..... Bill Wernet ERA/CERA

The chap I'm looking for is /was ERA Bill WERNERT who was a tiffy in VENDETTA in 1960/61 and a CPOMTP in BRISBANE in 1967. He must have paid off in the late sixties, I think as a WOMTP, and I believe he headed to the Hervey Bay area. He would be in his late seventies now, if still alive.
He gave me a lot of help when going for my tickets in VENDETTA in1960/61, and gave me a thorough tour of BRISBANE before I went to HOBART as the deputy MEO. I owe a lot of my career, such as it was, to him.
Can you please forward this to your naval contacts to see if anyone knows where an old ERA/CERA BILL WERNERT is living and how to contact him. I have an

Would you mind forwarding a request to the reunion of 9RAR, if anyone can remember my husband Stephen Evans, who served as a forward scout in 1969.

He died in a car accident, in Canberra, in 1994.

If they can share any stories about his time in Vietnam, I would be most grateful, as would our 6 children.

Many thanks, Joy Evans

Stephen Andrew Evans was a regular soldier, 218535, who went Vietnam into these units, ARU, 1RAR and ended up in C Coy 9RAR.

Steve wrote the poem “The Lonely Forward Scout”. He came from Liverpool.

Looking For .....20/12/12.... Vendetta Vung Tau Incident

I refer to our telephone conversation earlier today regarding an incident in Vung Tau Harbour in June of 1966.  At the time, Bill Ibbotson, a veteran whom I am representing in his dealings with the DVA, was a very young ABQMG on HMAS Vendetta.  Bill reports that whilst the ship was anchored in the harbour, he witnessed at a range of 3-400 yards, a Vietnamese ‘sampan’ approaching an anchored US navy ship in the harbour.  When (presumably) challenged by the US ship the sampan did not stop but continued on its path towards the US ship.  Bill reports that the US ship then engaged the sampan with machinegun fire until it (the sampan) became stationary in the water.  It is essential to Bill’s claim with the DVA that his account of this incident be verified as it does not appear in the Report of Proceedings for that period of time submitted by the captain of HMAS Vendetta. The acceptance by the DVA that this incident did occur is a vital component of Bill’s claim. The DVA is of the opinion that if the captain did not include the incident in his Report of Proceedings then it did not happen and is therefore denying liability for Bill’s condition and disallowing his claim.

My request is that this matter be canvassed among your members in the hope that another one or more of the crew at the time will remember the incident and be prepared to make a written statement in support of Bill’s claim.  Should any of the former crew remember the incident and wish to be of assistance I may be contacted by email at valmabob@westnet.com.au or by mobile phone on 0417 091 765.

Thanks in anticipation for your assistance.

Looking For ..... 11/11/12 .... Various Sydney crew

G’day Men,

Wes Olson is gathering data for a second book about HMAS Sydney II and he has noted that the following men all have letters or diaries in the AWM which he wants to quote, but there are no contact details for the donors. So, he needs to make contact with descendants of the following men to gain permission.

16069 Eric Charles Evans, RAN. Enlisted in Victoria. Posted off ship before it was sunk.
13585 Jack Sheather, RAN. Enlisted in NSW. Went down with ship.
R21906 Phillip Reginald Herington, RAN. Enlisted in NSW. Posted off ship before it was sunk.
S3383 Ronald William Boorman, RAN. Enlisted in NSW. Posted off ship before it was sunk.
21715 William George McCartney, RAN. Enlisted in NSW. Posted off ship before it was sunk.

3863 John Keene, RAAF. Enlisted in NSW. Part of Seagull/Walrus maintenance team. Posted off ship before it was sunk.

I have a database of all those who sought a copy of the FSF DVD of wreck photos, which includes some relatives of shipmates who left the ship before her loss, but none are connected to the above. The Navy database of relatives was held by the Sea Power Centre but the last time I asked the IT Manager there, it was no longer theirs and no longer maintained; regardless, it was primarily concerned with relatives of men lost with Sydney.

Do any of your Associations have relatives of any of the above men on the books? Is it possible for you to send out an “All Ship – All Shore” to your members to see if you can locate them?

Here’s hoping!
Yours aye
Bob

Looking For .... 11/11/12 ....Captain Graeme McNally

All,

I have a request from a friend who is attempting to locate an ex-serving RAN officer, Captain Graeme McNally. Capt McNally was part of RAN project manager team on the NULKA project circa 1986 to Xmas 1987, up to the point where AWA agreed the final deal to proceed with NULKA development contract. It is also believed Capt McNally was posted as the FFG Project Manager at Williamstown dockyard post 1988.

The reason to contact Capt McNally is simply to pass him a book that has recently been authored by my friend on the NULKA project from concept to today and where to in the future; it is a fascinating read.

I would ask could you please pass this through your networks to see if anyone can assist in us making contact with Captain Graeme McNally, any assistance you or your networks can provide would be greatly appreciated.  Please send all responses to the address below.  Thank you.

Looking For ..... 10/3/12 ..... DDG Stores Ratings

Through our network of ex-pussers can any of you put me in contact with an ex-Stores rate Victualling, DDG type?  I need to determine, get an idea of the volume of food stores we used to bring on each week when we were weekly running.  This is one of the final nails in my DVA claim. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

As I stated to a mate recently.  “I am struggling with the final weights document, basically I am suffering from a lack of drive to complete it, which is really weird because I need it to have the operation; it is a state of mind I find myself in at the moment.  I am over the whole thing, I did the original injury on 25/26 May 1985 but  I have no intention of giving in to the b*st*rds.  I just need to find some moments to lift myself to do it.”  So this is me trying to get myself back on track.

I am really trying hard to get as much data as possible so DVA will have no wiggle room as I intend putting in a claim for my other knee once the smashed one is accepted.

Thanks for your assistance all.

Looking For ..... 13/11/11 ... DAVID CHARLES LEE

I am currently trying to help the daughter of DAVID CHARLES LEE - R95299 to make urgent contact with a lost friend from the Vietnam war.

The friends details are:

GREGORY COLIN BARHAM: Service Number - R95198
Date of birth - 01 Feb 1950 : Place of birth - THE ENTRANCE NSW
Place of enlistment - SYDNEY
Next of Kin - BARHAM LAURIL

Gregory tried to make contact with Mr Lee several years ago and got in contact with Mr Lee’s mother. Unfortunately she passed away two weeks later before the contact information was passed on.

Mr Lee now lives in Thailand and has limited resources to locate Gregory. His health is now failing, and he urgently seeks contact with Gregory. (which he obviously doesn’t want Gregory to know until he makes contact).

I don’t know where else to search apart from the association(s) where he may be a member, or hopefully someone knows how to get in contact with him.

Due to privacy I do not expect anyone to send me his contact details (if known) but ask if you can please pass on my details to him in relation to Mr Lee.

During the war, Gregory Barham was known as “Slim” Barham.

Looking For .... 29/3/11 ..... Old J.R. Photos

Hi Guys,

Ian Dunn here, a JR from the 1st Intake at Leeuwin in 1960.

I have started a website for old photos of JR's from the years 1960 to 1984. Please note: I said old photos - not old JR's

We don't want photos taken after you graduated from Leeuwin or Cerberus - only from the JR training years, thanks.

The idea came from interest shown at the JR Golden Reunion in Perth in July 2010.

It was felt that someone should preserve the history of JR's and form a Museum of some sort. One group of guys are trying to track down the "Leeuwin Bell", while others are looking for "Honour Boards" from the walls of the Drill Hall.

There is already the "Boys Room" at Garden Island in Sydney so we thought that a photo museum would be a worthwhile project.

The website is at www.jrphotomuseum.com  Please visit and check out what we have done so far.

Photos from 1960 to 1984 can be emailed as per the instructions on the website and will be automatically added to that album in the email address that you choose to use.

There are 25 Albums - one for each year at Leeuwin and 2 Albums for Cerberus. Another Album is for photos that don't fit into any year in particular. Photos of interest can be downloaded for free or prints can be purchased at good prices - we have not put a profit margin on them. Other items with photo prints on them can also be purchased - such as mugs and T shirts etc.

I  hope that you can see the merit in spreading the word about this project to all our JR shipmates so we can preserve our history in photographic form and share our JR years with the world.

Our previous experience tells us that 'word of mouth' is the best form of communication.

We are a registered 'Not for Profit' business and cannot afford widespread advertising.

I propose to send this message to as many Intakes as I can locate and hope to get good exposure and response from the JR community.

Hoping you will help us,

Ian Dunn

The gentleman's name is .. Thomas Edward Harrison.

Tom would be 70 or 71 years old by now. We understand that he attained the rank of Lieutenant Commander at some stage of his career in the RAN. I met Tom's younger brother Philip years ago and Philip told me that Tom had achieved that rank but also added that he had become a Barrister at Law. Perhaps in the Navy? Last week one of our schoolmates told me that he met Tom in Sydney some years ago and he recalled that Tom was wearing the uniform of a Naval officer.

Any advice you can give me would be most appreciated,

Looking for ..... 10/10/10 ...... Robert Stanley EDMONDS

My name is Graham Lee, I am a Vietnam Vet and President of NAA Port Macquarie Sub Section (NSW). Recently, one of our senior members passed away and his surviving spouse, has requested I seek, any available contact information, for the below named Veteran.

Mr Robert Stanley EDMONDS,  218028 (Temporary) Corporal,  Royal Australian Infantry Corps.

5th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment 08/02/1969 10/03/1970
1 Australian Reinforcement Unit 26/11/1970 16/12/1970
Australian Force Vietnam Amenities and Welfare Unit 17/12/1970 28/10/1971

The Nominal Roll, shows this Vet, had two tours of duty to Vietnam and his mother, has not made contact with him for 40 years. She is now in her 80's and still doesn't know the reason, for their estrangement over the past 40 years. She now feels even more compelled, to make contact with her first born son and make peace if possible.
I would appreciate, if you would peruse your membership rolls and let me know if you have any contact details, I may be able to pass on to his mother. I understand Privacy Laws may come into play here, but any information would be extremely helpful.

Thank You and Regards,

Graham Lee JP President

G’Day everyone……I’m looking for help again. I’m searching for female military uniforms for the museum. I have been looking everywhere, but they seem to be scarce. I have found some on E-Bay, which has given me a start .Can you put the word out for me again? Thanks. I’m after uniforms from all the services.

I would like to find a navy hat like this one   as I found Army and Air Force hats of similar style on E-Bay.

Looking for ..... 4/5/10 ...... DUKW Information

Hi
My name is John Loughman and I am the Model Curator for the Australian Vietnam Veterans Museum at Phillip Island, Vic.
I am preparing to build a 1/35 scale model of a  DUKW operated by HMAS Sydney before it received the six Landing Craft.
I need confirmation that the vehicle colour was grey and any further information concerning serial numbers / code nrs etc would be greatly
appreciated. Any further information as to how many DUKW's were carried and how they operated would be great also.
The Museum already has a 10 foot long 1/72 scale model of HMAS Sydney on display, but we would appreciate any more Navy  memorabilia and photographs if ex-RAN people wished to donate.
We also process veterans 1/35 mm slides and photographs including negatives onto cd-rom's at no charge, usually with the proviso that the slides are donated to the museum for prosperity and safekeeping. The donor receives several cd' copies of the slides which enables the slides to be more easily displayed on a computer or television than the tedious business of setting up the projector, screen and darkening the room.
The Museum website is www.vietnamvetsmuseum.org

Thanks in advance
John Loughman, Bendigo.

Looking for ...... 21/9/09        -- Daines, James Richard

Not sure if you can help regarding finding information regarding my 'Deceased' Father in Law on behalf of his Wife and children still surviving.

We have discovered through the Canberra War Memorial that James Richard DAINES - N473604 served for a very short period in the Army - 7 Battalion Volunteer Defence Corps March 1944 to October 1944.  He is shown on Military Records as "War Service"

Jim (James) was born in 1925 so he was only 19 years of age in late 1944.   We have a photograph of him in Naval Uniform with a Cap Band reading HMAS VENDETTA.  Vendetta (1) History from the War Memorial states that Vendetta (1) "Paid Off" on 27 November 1945 and her hull was scuttled off Sydney Heads on 2 July 1948.  There is NO War Service recorded for Jim, mainly because he was too young.
Jim Maried on 27 November 1948 and the family do not know of any Military Service pre November 1948 or Post 1956 when Vendetta (2) was launched.
Any help and info to fill this "Family History" would be appreciated.   Jim's Wife turns 80 Years of age in 2010 and we wanted to solve this mistery by then.

Looking for ...... 8/9/09        --  Gibson, Arthur John -- Ex 7 RAR.

I have been contacted by a Gulf War 1 Veteran who is friends with a deceased Vietnam Veterans daughter and he has asked me if I can find any details on her father, in particular the circumstances surrounding his death. He is ex 7 RAR second tour and was apparently WIA and hospitalised in Sydney (Concord? veterans hospital ) where he apparently died in 1972, the daughter was only 4 yrs old and obviously has no real recollection of her dad. She doesn't even know how he died or what his wounds were, it seems her mum prefers to keep it all to herself probably to protect her kids.

If anybody can help please contact me on the below email address, his name and number are Arthur John Gibson 218450. Any info would be much appreciated.

Looking for ...... 10/1/09 ......            --          Charlie Coy 1 RAR

Just wondering if you can put this out on your network of Veterans please in that we may be able to locate some members or ex members of Charlie Coy 1 RAR who served in Somalia.

To-day I came across perhaps one of the most horrific cases of neglect of a Veteran who has slipped through the cracks of all Ex Service Organizations, DVA and of his mates whom he served with.  Michael was born on 27 May 1968 served with we believe, 1 Platoon Charlie Coy 1 RAR in Somalia .

Michael lives in a geriatric nursing home in Herston Brisbane, which his carer calls a hell hole, his life is in the control of the Adult Guardian and the Public Trustee looks after his finances for the rest of his life.  He virtually has no one in life except his carer, an exceptional Scottish elderly man.  How this has happened is unbelievable.  I am trying to ascertain members who may have served with Michael, contacts that is,  so I can obtain information regards to Michael's service in Somalia .

Michael has Huntington's Disease and it is extremely difficult for him to communicate and so if I can find someone who served with him to talk too, I can help Michael make the relevant claims to the Dept of Veterans' Affairs.  Michael has a 15 year old daughter who I have spoken to as well and is also desperate to find help for her father.

He can receive messages but his brain cannot transmit information back and that is the nature of the disease I believe.  His carer who brought Michael to see us in an off chance that we may be able to help, is Michael's life line for communication.  This is a terrible case for a young man of 40 years old, who has also served in East Timor .

My request:  I would like to be able to contact any members of Charlie Company 1 RAR who served in Somalia to gather more information that can support Michael 'Cookie' Cook.

Thank you in anticipation, any help or suggestion would be gratefully received.

I can find no reference to the book on the web or the Australian War Memorial (AWM) website He did not serve in Vietnam, and could have been an Army Reserve Officer. I have contacted the AWM asking it for assistance.

Can I ask for your assistance in tracking this man? We have had considerable success in the recent past in tracing soldiers, and perhaps we can do it again.

Regards,
John
