SERVE II SAIL
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I have received the following and believe it may be of benefit to some. I also
believe that it is a great cause and it would be nice to see the program
extended to all states hence I am putting this out nationwide.
If anyone has any contacts with our newer veterans please pass this on.
Mooloolaba Yacht Club has started up a Serve II Sail program for wounded
veterans. The Pilot Program was run late last year and received very well by its
six participants. To read more about the Pilot Program, gohttp://www.foxsportspulse.com/assoc_page.cgi?c=1-10060-0-0-0&sID=337542.
We have now received Get Started Queensland Sport & Rec Department funding to
deliver the program throughout next year. The challenge has been getting the
message out and about the veteran community about this program opportunity. Are
you able to share the following information among your network ?
Veterans needed for Experience Sailing program
Mooloolaba Yacht Club are looking for veterans from all services including
peacekeeping forces to get involved in the club’s Serve II Sail experience
sailing program.
The program is aimed at providing wounded veterans with new skills which will
help them to get active and to integrate back into the community.
They will be taken through a Learn to Sail program made up of four sessions over
two consecutive weeks for up to six veterans sailing 20-foot yachts on Mooloolah
River in front of The Wharf Mooloolaba. The veterans will then be given the
opportunity to continue sailing on one of the club member’s yachts in the
club’s weekly Fun races. For those that want to progress their sailing skills
there is a development course provided later in the year.
The Pilot Program was run late last year and proved a valuable experience for
the six participants including Flight Sergeant Colin White walked into the
program more daunted by the unfamiliarity of the situation rather than the
sailing. But it wasn’t long before the cross service chatter and ribbing
started, the stories shared and the quickly established camaraderie of the group
gave White the confidence to stay around and enjoy the program.
The first 2015 program starts in February. It will be run five times during the
year up until November.
