Take action with your mental health

Did you know the Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA) has a number of innovative websites and free mobile applications (apps) which you can use to help manage your mental health and wellbeing concerns whenever and wherever you need?

Taking action early is the key to good mental health.  The At Ease portal is DVA’s ‘one stop shop’ to access a wide range of online mental health and wellbeing resources.

If you’re looking for simple, relevant information and advice to help recognise the symptoms of poor mental health, or to keep your family healthy while caring for someone with a mental health condition, the At Ease Veterans and Veterans Families website is the place to start.

Or, perhaps like many others you’ve made the decision to find the ‘right balance' of alcohol, diet and exercise. If so, use the Right Mix Your Health & Alcohol website and the On Track with the Right Mix app to help achieve a healthier lifestyle.

To combat your stress levels and help you relax and unwind, use the simple tools found on the High Res resilience website.  You can also use the High Res app to help manage your immediate reactions to stressful situations on-the-go.

If you are concerned about suicide awareness and suicide prevention within the veteran community, access the dedicated Operation Life Online website to learn how you can help those at risk.

Remember, information to help you and your family cope with a range of mental health and wellbeing issues is readily available at your fingertips – simply check out the At Ease portal http://www.at-ease.dva.gov.au

Men's health - making the conversation easier

The Men’s Health Peer Education (MHPE) program raises awareness about men's health issues and encourages men to share responsibility for their own health and wellbeing. Recent changes have made the program more accessible to current members, and those who may wish to adapt the program to help their mates and community.

Keeping information updated and making it accessible without wasting paper is now possible with the complete Volunteer Resource, presentations and support materials now available for download from the DVA website.  This allows volunteers to access information quickly, print off a one page information sheet, or go to relevant web links, so that they are well prepared to talk with their mates about vital health and wellbeing issues.

In addition, MHPE is now available for use under a Creative Commons Licence.  This means anyone, anywhere can adapt and use the MHPE resource to benefit their mates and the community around them (provided they attribute the source and indicate if any changes were made).

Read through the material at the below link, and tell your Men’s Shed, Ex-Service Organisation, Rotary, or any group who might benefit. View the materials at www.dva.gov.au/mhpe.htm.

It is a 52 week program, either in a group or individual format, and includes two physical activity sessions per week that are tailored to meet your needs and 12 health educational seminars.

This program was developed as an outcome of the Vietnam Veterans Health Studies in the 1990’s as a consequence of the health impacts of operational service.
